SYNTAX AND SENTENCE STRUCTURE: A Functional Approach

Language is not merely a system of formal rules; it is a dynamic resource through which people make meaning, build relationships, exchange knowledge, and position themselves in social contexts. This volume, Syntax and Sentence Structure: A Functional Approach, is founded on the shared understanding
that sentence structure can only be fully understood when examined in relation to function, context, and communicative purpose. From this perspective, grammar is viewed not as a fixed set of prescriptions, but as a network of meaning-making choices shaped by social use. This book brings together contributions from fourteen scholars, each offering a chapter that explores syntax from a functional perspective. While the authors draw on diverse
experiences and areas of expertise, their work is united by a common theoretical orientation rooted in functional linguistics, particularly Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and related traditions.
